Finding Comfort In Solitude

“Whosoever is delighted in solitude, is either a wild beast or a god.”
― Aristotle
Solitude: the state or situation of being alone. We are constantly in motion, busy with our lives and are sometimes unable to slow down and take a break from the world. Maybe its because we are busy trying to live life or maybe its the fear of being alone and actually listening to our own deep thoughts and addressing the key issues in our lives. Whatever the reason is and no-matter how busy we are, withdrawing and enjoying time in solitude is essential.
When Solitude is embraced, the following are experienced:
- intentional withdrawal from the influence and expectations of others for a specific period of time.
- being able to have clarity of thought and listen to our heart.
- ability to find inner peace and satisfaction in self.
- we take a break from our busy lives.
- we discover that we are less clingy and desperate in friendships and relationships.
- we are more self sufficient and independent.
- It provides opportunities to re-discover ourselves.
- Practice Self Love. Sometimes its hard for some people to express self love. It's not always easy to be accepting and loving of ourselves, but when you are spending time with yourself, you have to like who you're hanging out with. Not liking one's self is the reason why alot of people don't want to be alone. They simply dont find joy spending time with their own mind. Self acceptance and self love is needed to enjoy solitude.

Find Activities To Occupy Your Time. Most people don't like to be alone because they have no idea what to do with themselves when they're alone, arranging activities you can get involved in that will make your time alone worthwhile. Try new things and dont limit yourself. One thing I'd suggest first and foremost is this: Try to be open-minded about ideas and, if you really can't think of anything you could do, ask other people what they do when they find themselves alone. Also, it would be a good time to invest in spiritual growth.

Embrace Your Thoughts. One of the most intimidating things about alone time is that you're alone with your thoughts. Doing things and keeping busy all of the time is a great way to avoid thinking about things especially things that might be bothering you!, but it really is a great feeling when you take time and listen to your thoughts without distractions. When you embrace what you are thinking and feeling, you can work towards accepting it and dealing with it. It might not seem like a fun thing to do but its important to take some time to yourself to think about what's going on in your life and how it's affecting you

Don't judge your solitude. Often when we're alone we think of it as a bad thing. We feel lonely or left out. But, remember, no one is judging your solitude other than you. If you think about it, you'll realize that you have the power to place any label on your alone time that you want to. Want it to be a sad, negative experience? It will be. Want it to be a useful, positive experience? It will be. Whatever you want it to be, it will be. The choice is yours to make your alone time something that makes you happy, more productive, and more fulfilled as a person.
"I love to be alone. I never found the companion
that was so companionable as solitude."
Henry David Thoreau
